Wire mesh has the same problem. Pulled up during the pour or left resting on the subbase, wire mesh provides no real reinforcement. It needs to stay mid-slab to distribute shrinkage cracks and help the concrete handle tension.
Temperature Matters: Seasonal Timing
Our cool valley climate means foundation work requires careful scheduling. Don't pour concrete when temperatures are below 40°F or expected to freeze within 72 hours. Cold concrete sets slowly and gains strength poorly—you risk a weak slab that cracks prematurely or never achieves full strength.

If winter work is unavoidable, we use heated enclosures, hot water in the mix, and insulated blankets to maintain proper curing temperature. We never use calcium chloride in residential work—it accelerates set but causes long-term damage to concrete and embedded steel.
